“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”

I'm Meiko Wong, an emerging designer based in Sydney, Australia.
My path to entry into the creative industries is an atypical one.
Prior to pursuing a career in design, I was a Management Consultant and Project Manager. I am ambitious to fuse my business acumen, expertise in communication, logistics and time-management with my design abilities.
I am particularly attracted to film for it's fast-paced, high-energy environment and astonishing diversity of talent.

Why design? Why make art?
Art can encourage a suspension of reality and bring about a shift in perspective. This is the art that moves me and the work I want to create.
A few of my favourite things ...
World building, the exploration of character, skilled craftsmanship, collaboration and problem-solving.
Recent Work Experience -
From January to November 2020, with the exception of a few months due to COVID-19, I was employed in the Set Decoration department on a feature film at Fox Studios, Australia. My role was incredibly varied - in addition to undertaking research, drafting and distributing Furniture and Lighting Plans for Rebecca Cohen (Set Decorator), I assisted in Soft Furnishings, Graphics, Swing Gang and Props Manufacture as well as spending some time on set.
During the COVID shut down (April - June) I returned to corporate employment, assuming a role as a Project Lead at the Australian Digital Health Agency, and was fortunate to begin a mentorship with renowned Production Designer Colin Gibson.
Prior to pursuing my design passions I had a successful career as a Management Consultant and Project Manager working on large scale, multi-million dollar programs of work with a focus on IT and physical infrastructure deployment for clients in the government and telecommunications industries.
In addition, I designed and built several websites, began working with start-up businesses ‘1to6’ (furniture) and ‘Beck & Doodle’ (children's clothing), launched 'Custom Kitsch' to showcase my own furniture restoration projects and began a collaboration on short film ‘The List,’ directed by Samuel Faull.
In 2019 I completed a BFA: Design for Performance at NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Arts). During my studies I was fortunate to be involved in projects spanning the disciplines of opera, cabaret, theatre, exhibition design, music video and film. I also completed a number of industry placements assisting variously in Costume and the Art Department on film The Drover's Wife (Costume Designer Tess Schofield) and television series The Commons (Costume Designer Xanthe Heubel), Doctor, Doctor - S4 (Production Designer Vanessa Williams), and Between Two Worlds (Production Designer Fiona Donovan), as well as musical theatre production The Boy From Oz (Costume Designer Tim Chappel).
